Today, I celebrate 2 very special people. First, my hubby Derek turns 41 years old. So, for the next 6 months, I’m married to an older man! I honestly could not have asked for a better husband and father than what God gave to me in this man. What a great example my boys have in him.
Also, on this day, early in the morning, 15 years ago, Derek received the best birthday present, ever! That was the day that we met our kind, sweet, tenderhearted, smart, and funny Russ!
In my first blog, I referred to Russ as my “beast”, and that’s exactly what he is! This kid is amazing! He’s had some stuff to overcome in his short 15 years. Like a beast, he does his best to move above and beyond. He has so much passion in everything he does. Whether it is Crossfit, or chores around the house, he is purposeful in what he does.
As I was thinking about his birthday, I was reminded of an example of his tenacity. Russ had to go to speech therapy when he was little. He always struggled with pronunciation and therefore spelling. So, I gave him a little grace in that area of his grades. We had gotten to the point, though, that he was bringing home grades that were unacceptable to me. So, I told him that I was taking away a privilege until he had a passing grade in this class. I don’t remember saying this, but his understanding was that he had to have a 100% on the next test. That kid studied, and worked, and he brought home an A+ on his next spelling test. I was blown away. I also had a new standard for his spelling grades.
I honestly think he was just as surprised as I was. From that point on, he realized that he couldn’t study the way everyone else did, and he had to find his own way. He has continued to work that hard at everything he does. I’m so proud of him and the beast he has become. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for him! Happy Birthday Derek and Russ! I love you both with all my heart!
