Lift Up Your Head

We all know babies cry a lot.
It’s natural you see.
How else would they tell us
exactly what they need?

This baby boy and momma,
they’re really quite a pair.
He always has a smile for her,
but cries when she’s not there.

She always comes right back,
takes him in her arms again.
Then she’ll whisper in his ear,
and say these words to him:

“It’s okay sweet baby,
go ahead and cry it out.
When you’re done, lift up your head.
You’ll see the sun no doubt.
I’ll stay here and hold you,
and help you dry those tears.
Then we’ll smile and laugh again.
There’s nothing you should fear.

As baby grew into a boy,
with struggles we all know,
there were days when he felt sad,
and gentle tears would flow.

When a bully acted mean,
or he fell down in the dirt.
When he lost a baseball game,
or when his heart got hurt.

Mom would open up her arms,
and he already knew,
the words that she would whisper,
as only she could do:

“It’s okay sweet boy,
go ahead and cry it out.
When you’re done, lift up your head.
You’ll see the sun no doubt.
I’ll stay here and hold you,
I’ll help you dry those tears.
Then we’ll smile and laugh again.
There’s nothing you should fear.

One day he had to leave,
packed up and drove away.
Momma’s heart just broke in two,
but she knew he couldn’t stay.

Right before he left,
he was walking to the car,
he turned around and hugged her neck,
and said, “It’s not that far.”

“It’s okay sweet Momma,
go ahead and cry it out.
When you’re done, lift up your head.
You’ll see your son no doubt.
I’ll come back to see you,
There’s no need for tears.
We’ll get to smile and laugh again.
There’s nothing we should fear.

Just a few years later was
the biggest day he’d had.
He was pretty nervous,
’cause soon he’d be a dad.

That day when he met his girl,
he loved her at first sight.
He wrapped her in a blanket,
and held her oh so tight.

He sat beside his mother,
and they listened to her cry.
She watched him as he whispered
a special lullaby:

“It’s okay sweet girl,
go ahead and cry it out.
When you’re done, lift up your head.
You’ll BE THE SUN no doubt.
I’ll stay here and hold you,
when the future isn’t clear.
We’ll smile and laugh together.
Grow strong and have no fear.”
